Blue Shield to issue refunds to members in Medicare Supplement plans
H, I and High Deductible F
Starting on June 15, 2016 Blue Shield will mail refund checks to subscribers of Medicare Supplement plans H, I (with and without prescription drug coverage) and High Deductible F, along with a letter explaining the refund.
As you know, Blue Shield of California is a not-for-profit company with a mission to provide all Californians with access to affordable, quality health coverage.
Blue Shield and other health plans are required to spend a minimum percentage of plan members’ premiums on medical expenses aka MLR Medical Loss Ratio. If we do not meet the plan year threshold, we are required to provide refunds to individual policyholders the following year.
In 2015, the claims submitted by subscribers for Blue Shield’s Medicare Supplement plans H, I and High Deductible F did not meet that required minimum percentage, so we will provide refund checks to those members.
- Closed Plan H members will receive a $1,835.95 refund check.
- Closed Plan I members will receive a $969.87 refund check.
- High Deductible Plan F members will receive a $71.90 refund check.
Note: Your clients who are on a two-party contract will receive double those amounts on their refund check.
